Overview
Discover the hidden beauty of Lake Chala, a breathtaking crater lake formed over 250,000 years ago on the eastern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. Located about 55 km from Moshi and bordering Kenya, this tranquil destination is Tanzania’s deepest inland lake. Fed by underground streams from Kilimanjaro, Lake Chala’s waters change color with the seasons—from deep blue to turquoise to emerald green—creating an ever-changing spectacle of nature.
The lake is surrounded by dramatic crater walls, lush vegetation, and diverse wildlife, including over 200 bird species, blue and colobus monkeys, dik-diks, and occasionally elephants. Visitors can enjoy scenic hikes, canoeing, fishing (catch and release), swimming, or simply relaxing at the Lake Chala Lodge while taking in panoramic views of the lake and Mount Kilimanjaro.
Far from the crowds, Lake Chala offers a peaceful escape and a deep connection with Tanzania’s natural heritage and ancient legends.
